Brixton online community forum notches up over a third of a million user posts

The Brixton forum on our sister site urban75 recently smashed through the landmark figure of a third of a million posts by its users, making it the busiest and most popular discussion board for Brixton-related news, questions, chat and rumours.

Crowd-funded before the phrase was even invented, urban75 dates back to the very early days of the internet – the first version went online in 1995 – and started life as an activist resource and online arts magazine.

The core of the site has always been the community forums, which cover a vast array of topics, from current news to music and film, football, arts and photography.

The forums have defiantly never carried any form of advertising, or received any grants or sponsorship, with all running costs covered by users who donate anonymously to the site. All the admin staff are also unpaid volunteers.

The Brixton forum

The hugely popular Brixton forum is a  true ‘hyperlocal’ community resource, letting anyone with an interest in Brixton post up their thoughts, or share stories, ask questions or just indulge in online chat.

The forum covers Brixton and the surrounding neighbourhood, so you’ll also find conversations relating to areas like Loughborough Junction, Tulse Hill, Streatham, Herne Hill, Kennington and Stockwell

With a very lively, knowledgeable and passionate community, debates can sometimes get a little robust – but that’s only because many of the posters who contribute are passionate Brixtonites!

Despite its popularity, the Brixton forum only forms a relatively small part of the urban75 boards, where there are over 30 individually themed forums, hosting a staggering total of nearly 17 million individual messages.

The forums are completely free to use (although you need to register to make a post) and anyone is welcome to contribute – although there is a strict no-advertising rule (if you wish to advertise a Brixton event or service, you can do that in the separate Brixton Noticeboard forum).

Proper privacy

Importantly, unlike Facebook and other commercial  social media channels, absolutely no user data is mined or sold, and a user’s privacy is fully respected.

And, unlike Facebook (and some Brixton-based Facebook groups), there’s absolutely zero tolerance for anyone posting up racist, homophobic and misogynistic content- or any other kind of hate speech – and offenders will find themselves swiftly booted off the site forever.
