Brixton street party announced after Thatchers death: Winduish Square 5:30pm tonight

Announced on Facebook and urban 75, is this event to mark the death of Margaret Thatcher.

A party to celebrate the death of Thatcher and our continuing commitment to fight the legacy she left and that continues to devastate the lives of ordinary people everywhere.

By 4:30pm, well over 500 people had already signed up to the Facebook event. We’ll be there to cover proceedings.

Details:

Time: 17:30 onwards
Monday 8th April 2013
Location: Windrush Square, central Brixton

It’s a disgrace!

Labour councillor Alex Bigham has already branded the event as “discraceful” on Twitter.

Some background to Thatcher for our younger readers:

“She created today’s housing crisis. She created the banking crisis. And she created the benefits crisis. It was her government that started putting people on incapacity benefit rather than register them as unemployed because the Britain she inherited was broadly full employment.

She decided when she wrote off our manufacturing industry that she could live with two or three million unemployed, and the benefits bill, the legacy of that, we are struggling with today. In actual fact, every real problem we face today is the legacy of the fact that she was fundamentally wrong.” – Ken Livingstone

    1. Ken who? Oh, you mean the bloke that tried to evict the peace protestor Brian Haw from Parliament Square. Well I’m glad he’s a has-been.

  1. Having just buried two friends (i’m 25) yes, i don’t wish death on anyone and ordinarily would not, especially as she was so old and frail when she went but the woman not only did harm but we will live with the fall out of her actions for arguably generations.Hopefully we can start living from the actions and mending things? I hope so..to those going to the party be safe and those not respect their right to go…

    1. Really? You sad sad fool. Please publish the funeral arrangements for your two friends so we can all come and celebrate. Would you respect my right to do that? Thought not. F*cking hypocrite.

  2. Wasn’t it Thatcher’s government that wanted Commonwealth war heroes (amongst others) to pay £60 to stay here after decades of perfectly legal residency? A lot sent their medals back in disgust, I seem to remember. One thing I do definitely remember about that was I was ashamed to be British.

  3. Come on everyone – get real, no-one (even a prime minister) is going to get everything right. Lady Thatcher achieved a lot for this country during a very difficult political and economic time. Whatever people thought of her she did stick to her values and ideals unlike more modern politicians who swing like weather vanes in order to secure votes. And to those scum who are partying, get a job stop relying on handouts! ( as Maggie would have said) RIP.

  4. I’m not sad to see her go, it would just be nice if your quote was by someone with a bit of political integrity. Neil Kinnock seems to have a more trusted and respected opinion.

  5. Whitus maximus – at last a bit of measured thinking today! I wonder what with the Iraq war, non regulation of banks, selling british companies to overseas businesses (who promise to save jobs then make people redundant), economic meltdown and general disaster that was the last labour gov will people be reacting like this when Tony or Gordon go? Maybe we should have another party…

  6. Think what you like of Thatcher but she was a human being and this is sickening, truly vile behavious. It only serves to reflect something dark in those participating and reflects badly on Brixton-you should be ashamed of yourselves.

  7. So, you wish to express your displeasure at Lady Thatcher? Now? She’s dead. It’s a bit late. You should have organised your tasteful street party the day after she ceased to be Prime Minister. But then again, none of you have the balls to say anything to anyone whilst they are still alive. You’re safe from her wrath now though, so knock yourselves out, saddos.

    1. Why is it a ‘laughing’ stock? Do you actually know *anything* about the place?

That’s a rhetorical question, by the way. You clearly haven’t the slightest clue about the place.

      1. I have, and it is after this even if it wasn’t before. Very sad.

I didn’t see you having a street party when labour lost office…where are those WMDs by the way? Thousands of innocent people have died over Iraq?

  8. Why would we rejoice at that news, Rob? Fact is Maggie won – plain and simple. She led by example and did what she did (as difficult as some of those decisions had to be) in order to achieve the best outcome for the country and because of that you can afford to go to the local store and buy your alcohol (own or economy brand I expect)in order to “toast” her demise. People like you should crawl back under the rock you came from – you don’t have the balls to stand up and face her when alive,so basically scared of an 87 year old grandmother! And yes, I can say that as I am proud to have served with one of those regiments that will assist in her final journey next week. Son, get a life….! And while you’re at it stop dragging Brixton down to your level – its much better than that.
