Opening a few months ago opposite the David Bowie mural in Tunstall Road, Brixton Blend is an independent speciality coffee shop promising a “chilled relaxed environment” and tasty coffee.
Serving a good range of coffee from local suppliers such as Volcano, the two-floor cafe also offers a range of cakes, light meals, teas, hot chocolate and other drinks, with speedy free wi-fi on tap for laptop wielders.
Coffee pricing is at the premium end: Cappuccinos and Lattes are £2.70/£2.90, Flat Whites £2.70 and Espressos at £2.40, while cakes are three quid a go.
The coffee tasted good but it was a bit of a bummer to find that it only comes in wasteful takeaway paper cups.
At these prices, surely it’s not too much to get an actual cup (the cafe say that they haven’t the facilities or budget for proper china and a dishwasher).
Looking upstairs we found a light, airy room, although all the exposed wood and the lack of furnishings made it something of a cold and echoey space, prompting patrons to talk in whispers.
Although everything was clean and well presented, it felt more like we were sitting in an office or a library than a coffee shop, and although this may suit some hard-working caffeine-imbibers, we prefer to work somewhere with a bit of an atmosphere, and maybe the chance to chat if the mood takes.
The Wi Fi was nippy though, but there are some dead spots upstairs so choose your seat carefully.
Bowie fans visiting Brixton to pay their respects will love the chance to enjoy a coffee and look out over the mural.
The staff were friendly and we found Brixton Blend to be a welcoming place to stop in for a coffee.
In the face of so many corporate coffee chains opening up in central Brixton, it’s great to have a new independent business offering a more personal alternative.
Serving lovely coffee, this is a great alternative to the chains that now dominate the centre of Brixton. Open 7 days a week, there’s plenty of space inside and the upstairs room is light and airy and great for working, small meetings or just enjoying a drink.
The paper cups are disappointing, and some may find the ambience a little sterile, but it’s still miles better than the nearby Costa, Starbucks and Caffe Nero. Be sure to check out San Marino as well, which is another excellent independent cafe a short walk away.
