Back in June 2014, Brixton Buzz was delighted to see a wonderful old Victorian shopfront sign for David Greig being revealed when the previous shop closed down.
The shop at 232 Coldharbour Lane was previously used by the Futon Workshop, and after their banner was taken down this delightful original sign in near-perfect condition was exposed.
Once seen a rival to the nascent Sainsbury’s brand, David Greig was a supermarket chain founded by the Greig family of Hornsey, north London, and the business formed strong Brixton connections, opening multiple branches along Atlantic Road, Station Road and Electric Avenue.
Detail of the shop front today, with the sign completely removed.
We looked on eBay to see if the sign had been sold but found nothing. Does anyone know anything about its fate?
