Motown Night at Blues Kitchen

This trendy foodie/bar/venue will be celebrating the music of Motown, with the house band churning through some of the Detroit label’s greatest hits, including mighty tunes from the likes of Martha Reeves & The Vandellas, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson and more. At 12.45am, house band the Atlantic Soul Orchestra will be taking over the stage to mash up a crowd-pleasing slice of soul music, with resident DJs rocking the floor till close at 2am.

Strut down to the dancefloor and bust out your finest moves to an uncomplicated mix of crowd pleasing party classics, from Hip-Hop to House, Disco to R&B. Unlike most clubs who would rather deal with toxic radioactive waste then entertain hen and stag parties, the Grand actively encourages them.

A look around the Book and Record Bar in West Norwood, south London

A top notch indie record shop and bookstore by day, the vinyl racks are manfully tussled aside every fortnight to create a loin-thrusting, hip-oscillating dancefloor for DJs.  On the first Friday of every month, the Stick It On crew invite you – the great unwashed – to haul in three monster tunes of your choice and see if the floor feels the love.

DJs Jeanie Tee, Aitch and Aural Voyeurism throw down a genre-hopping night of bashment to D’n’B in the much-loved Albert. Many locals are still reeling from its opinion-dividing ‘beach shack’ makeover, but it’s still the friendliest boozer in town.

Meatz’n’Beatz at Fu Manchu

Hidden under railway arches, Fu Manchu goes for upmarket kerchingers, dispensing “carefully crafted” cocktails to the Cla’am massive. Expect to hear disco, Latino and soul all night.

His quiff shakes like there’s a randy rooster nesting inside when the rock and roll is flowing, and that’s likely to be all ruddy night long as DJ Frank Jones and his partner in arms Big Bad Bal set the mo’fo’ 45s spinning.

Bulgarian Music Festival at the Clapham Grand

This is the first of two nights celebrating Bulgarian Liberation Day, brought to downtown Clapham by the Wild Rose BG Music Festival. Serving up traditional folk, dance, pop and RnB music, the festival will showcase some of the greatest voices of Bulgaria, with Mihaela Fileva and Dessy Dobreva taking the stage on Friday, and Lubo Kirov and Maria Ilieva doing their stuff on Saturday.

With an alarming profusion of spirits at the bar (along with some decent real ales), this vintage-styled bar hosts DJs gyrating selections of ska, northern soul, bluegrass, country, and rock and roll. Be sure to check out the curious animated pufferfish behind the bar.

Located across several sprawling levels, this recently refurbished and intimate Eastern themed bar/club has long been one of the area’s hidden gems, providing an old-school, home-spun alternative to the cash-laden club chains currently chomping away at Brixton’s nightlife.

You can’t go wrong with a good ol’ knees up in a traditional boozer, and DJs Stevie ‘No Cake’ Dundee, Tony Rodriguez and Jazzy Gman will be supplying oodles of good time music in the bar, while Chuks and Michael Speaks will be busying themselves with musical matters in the Boogie Box.

The Shakedown at Canavan’s Peckham Pool Club

Shakedown Reggae style with Earl Gateshead at the controls and Ben Cutter on the mic, joined by guest Adam Prescott (Reggae Roast) plus a DJ set from producer/multi-instrumentalist C.K.t.r.l. It’s an early start, with Residents Snowman & Reilly spinning sounds from Ska to Jah at 8pm, with free admission before 11pm.

Easter Thursday at Effra Social and Dogstar - photos

This long serving Brixton institution remains one of the biggest parties in town, spawning vast queues up Coldharbour Lane, while party bangers are delivered by Audio Sushi DJs inside. Photo ID is needed to enter the portals of the Dogstar, so bring along your documents or heaven knows how miserable you will be.

A grand night out at Duckie at the RVT with The Actionettes

Hosted by the New Jersey-born Amy Lamé (now the London Night Tsar), Duckie remains one of the most provocative and funny cabaret nights in London, with unexpected burlesque and musical acts playing to a packed gay/mixed crowd. Personning the decks is the Readers Wives DJs, who can be relied on to whisk up a wondrous, retro-loving selection of tunes, covering anything from Kate Bush, Joy Division, the Cure, Rapture and the Smiths. And that’s all fine by us.

The venue’s weekly Sunday Jamm invites you to fill your face with street food, engorge yourself with Rum Punch and happy hour drink deals, and then watch a live performance by Jamaican rocksteady legend Dawn Penn backed by King Tubby’s Hi Fi. Altogether now, “No, No, No, You Don’t Love Me ….”

Effra Hall Tavern

Old school Brixtonites may lament the growing homogenisation of this traditional boozer tucked away from the main drag, but their Sunday jazz sessions are still one of the best places to wind down after a mad weekend. Grab yourself a Guinness or three and let those silky smooth horn parpings and freeform fretboard excursions banish all thoughts of the upcoming week of work.

Chomp tasty slices of pizza and grind your pepper mill in time to top notch live jazz at this intimate restaurant, a mere five minutes perambulation from Streatham Hill train station.

Grass Roots Live Music at Club 414

Live music Sundays at Club 414: the best late bar in Brixton

This new free regular night is proving a popular attraction amongst locals, with an all-star band laying down some lively jazz, reggae and blues in Coldharbour Lane. Led by UB40 trumpet player Patrick Anthony, the razor-tight house band invites musicians new and old to come up on stage and join in. Running till 1am, it’s a great way to wrap up the week.
