Dulwich Hamlet Football Club will once again be celebrating International Women’s Day (IWD) this Saturday 11th March, at their home league tie against Merstham FC.
The club will honouring the contribution that women have made to Dulwich Hamlet FC, the local community and the game as a whole.
Although International Women’s Day fell on Wednesday 8th March, thousands of events take place not just on the day itself but throughout March to mark the economic, political and social achievements of women.
To commemorate the occasion, Dulwich Hamlet have adopted the campaign’s theme of #BeBoldForChange and commissioned a special one-off purple kit in lieu of their famous pink and blue colours.
Purple is the primary colour used for IWD because it stands for justice and dignity. The kit will also feature the logos of IWD’s charity partners, Catalyst and the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS).
Supporters will also be able to bid to own one of the one-off shirts by entering a silent auction with all proceeds going to IWD’s charity partners Catalyst and WAGGGS (check out the chat thread for details).
For Saturday’s match, the Dulwich Hamlet FC side will be led onto the pitch by young footballers, the next generation of women footballers in this country. These girls are from the official DHFC charity partner for 2016/17, Football Beyond Borders Warriors (FBB).
FBB offer free of charge football training sessions to get more women playing football. The sessions are run by young female coaches seeking to make their way into professional coaching.
On the Hamlet website, there’s a fascinating article by Trust Board member, Walter Johnson, who has spent the last few months interviewing women across the game, to highlight the breadth of opportunities available to women wanting to make a contribution to the game in a range of roles.
The match against Merstham kicks off at 3pm, this Saturday, 11th March.
