On Saturday, Dulwich Hamlet travelled to a damp south coast to take on league leaders Bognor Regis – and came close to taking away all three points.
Hamlet led from an early Matt Drage strike, and managed to hold on until the 85th minute, when Crane equalised for the hosts.
Unfortunately, I was unable to make the trip (it almost always bloody rains when I visit Bognor anyway), so thanks are due to GT, BW and Fingers for the photos.
Chatting on the Hamlet forum, NPDHFC had this to say about the game:
A cold bitter day on the south coast.
On the balance of things probably a fair result. Both teams had good spells of possession and chances were at a premium.
Took the lead in the first half from a well worked short corner, Matt Drage’s effort taking a generous deflection on its way into the net.
Team were well organised and held out, Beaney rarely setting a foot wrong in the middle of the park.
Was always going to be difficult protecting a slim lead against a team at the top of the league, so whilst disappointing, a late equaliser was not unexpected. 1-1
May not be playing the sort of football that one had come to expect of Bognor sides in recent years but there’s a determined streak in the currant side.
Have got a lot of late goals recently, today a case in point, to win games and salvage points that have kept them where they are. Contrast that with DHFC where late goals conceded have cost us points
A football fanzine commentated on the pink horn:
Behind the goal, and seemingly every time the boys in pink and blue fired in a corner or a cross, a lone voice shouted “It’s coming, it’s coming, it’s coming.” He seemed to be having an almost sexual experience, as if he’d been abducted by Woody Allen and locked in an Orgasmatron. Mind you, anything to keep warm.
The draw sees Hamlet stay within striking distance of the play offs, although they’re going to have to win those games in hand – and that’s not always an easy task.
