With trendy new businesses pushing prices ever upwards around central Brixton, it’s great that the Brixton Pound Cafe in Atlantic Road is letting people pay what they can afford (and be generous if they want to support the project!).
Opening in July 2016, the folks at the Brixton Pound (£B) explained the ethos behind their cafe:
Brixton Pound is excited to announce its newest project: the Brixton Pound cafe! Opened in July 2016 at 77 Atlantic Road, SW9 8PU, it is the first cafe in Brixton where all food and drink is served on a pay-what-you-feel basis.
Rather than setting a fixed price, we give customers an opportunity to have an affordable experience, or be generous.
Participatory, inclusive, and social, it’s a format that fits perfectly into B£’s ethos and aim of questioning the traditional money systems and showcasing that viable alternatives exist.
The cafe looks to source their food from local surplus, using perfectly edible food that would otherwise be wasted and turning it into tasty and healthy meals.
The Brixton Pound partnered up with a number of organisations including Local Greens, People’s Fridge, surplus sharing app OLIO, Brixton Soup Kitchen and Brixton People’s Kitchen, along with local traders, such as Ms Cupcake, Sweet Carolina, Nour Cash & Carry and Faiz Fine Foods, to help recycle food in the area.
The cafe is a not-for-profit venture, with all revenues going to support the local community via the Brixton Fund.
Local artist Andy Insh has several of his Pointilist styled Brixton landscapes on display in the cafe.
The works are all for sale and, altruistically, he is giving all the money to the Brixton Fund. Nice one, Andy.
The cafe hosts several events throughout the week. There’s free wi-fi too.
You can pick up one of the famous Bowie Brixton Ten Pound notes.
The Brixton Pound’s logo is inspired by the distinctive architectural lines of the nearby neo-Brutalist Barrier Block.
