It’s David Bowie’s birthday today and Effra Social has a treat in store for anyone who wants to celebrate by bopping the night away to the cosmic tunes of Brixton’s most famous star man.
Their free monthly rock n roll party ‘Brixton Surf City’ marks the occassion with host DJs Frank Jones and Big Bad Bal brining the immortal music of David Bowie and Elvis Presley (who would have also celebrated his birthday today) together for a massive Bowie vs. Presley party!
Expect great music all night, with a cocktail party at Tarantino’s house vibe featuring some of Rock n Roll’s most iconic classics and lots of other fantastic rockin’ treats you may not have heard before.
Brixton, born and bred…
David Robert Jones was born on 8th January 1947 at 40 Stansfield Road, Brixton, SW9 9RZ. His Mum (Margaret Mary Peggy Jones) worked as an usherette at the local cinema.
David, embarked on career in music, changed his surname to Bowie & went on to become one of the world’s most innovative & iconic recording artists, pioneering the birth of Glam Rock and constantly morphing through styles, persona’s and genres with every decade.
He celebrates his 69th birthday today by releasing his latest new album ‘Blackstar’. Here’s the video for ‘Lazarus’ from the new album…
Bowie is currently the face of the £10 Brixton note, and has been immortalised in the Aladdin Sane street mural on the side of Morleys department store courtesy of James Cochran (aka Jimmy C).
