Local Stockwell Cllr launches petition to try and stop the Labour leadership contest taking place

A Labour Stockwell ward Cllr has launched an online petition calling for the Labour party to halt the leadership contest.

Cllr Alex Bigham published the petition on Thursday morning. In just over 24 hours he has managed to gain the support of 15 people supporting his cause.

The petition states:

“The new leader of the Labour Party must have legitimacy or we risk another divisive, expensive leadership contest and losing public credibility. Across the country we are seeing widespread infiltration.

Tories, Greens and the hard left are all registering to vote in the leadership election. These people do not support the values of the Labour Party and in many cases are actively trying to damage it. We are calling for an immediate halt to the leadership contest until proper checks can be done to our membership and supporters.

This election could irrevocably damage our party, we have to fight to preserve it.”

Support for the petition has so far come from fellow Lambeth Labour Cllr Ed Davie, as well as Michael Warren, the apolitical Personal Assistant to Cllr Lib Peck, the Leader of Lambeth Council.

Bigham is very much from the right wing of the local Labour party. He was the Special Adviser for Stephen Twigg in his role as Shadow Secretary for Education – until the ultra Blairite got the sack.

When he’s not trying to stop the Labour leadership contest, Bigham now uses his knowledge handling the PR for Ark Academies, an organisation that manages independent state-funded schools.
