Brixton's legendary Club 414 threatened with closure and redevelopment

We are absolutely devastated to learn that the legendary Club 414 on Coldharbour Lane in Brixton is threatened with closure.

Brixton's legendary Club 414 threatened with closure and redevelopment

A true Brixton all-night institution, the club has been operating from the same premises for over thirty years. Originally known as Steppers, the small, family run two-floor club has more recently been home to the hard house/techno community, with many events going on till the morning.

The planning application seeks to replace the night club with yet another restaurant, and create the inevitable private flats.

Here’s the full text from Lambeth’s planning website:

Change of use from existing nightclub/bar with ancillary residential/office to ground floor use as retail (Clas A1) or restaurant/cafe (Class A3) or takeaway (class A5) or mixed use comprising restaurant/cafe and takeaway (Class A3/A5); the creation of three self-contained residential flats at first and second floors; and associated works including demolition of existing rear ground/first floor extensions, construction of new ground/first floor extensions with terraces above and installation of replacement double glazed timber framed front windows, replacement shopfront.

The club has long played an important part in the community, and more recently offered free use of the premises for our Ritzy Workers benefit and the Brixton Fightback fundraiser.

Some amazing nights have been put on there – some of the jazz evenings rivalled anything you’d find in the West End – and although the club is small, it has a very passionate and very loyal crowd who no doubt will be saddened and angered to hear this news.

We’ll be talking to the club owners later today to find out more about the situation and what can be done to fight these proposals.

In the meantime, we strongly urge you to lodge an objection on Lambeth’s planning site.

We have made this objection.

Brixton Buzz objects in the strongest possible terms to the closure of this club. It has served the community for thirty years and is an important and historic part of Brixton’s culture and heritage.

There is already more than enough restaurants in the area. Closing the 414 down would have a serious impact on the dance community and have a hugely detrimental impact on the club owners who have dedicated their lives to this friendly and welcoming place.
