Lambeth social inclusion, hope and recovery project (SHARP) has teamed up with London based Spanish artist Jose Gomez to host ‘Colores, Dame Colores’, an exhibition of outsider artwork in Brixton tonight – 30th April 6pm – 8pm.
Colores, Dame Colores, meaning ‘colours, give me colours’ is the first solo show of Jose Gomez and presents a selection of mixed media works capturing art and abstract expressionism, influenced by his cross-cultural identity as a southern Spanish artist living in London.
The SHARP team is a specialist team of mental health professionals focused on the recovery and well being for people using mental health services in Lambeth.
A local artist and carer Mary Salome set up the gallery two years ago, since then it has exhibited the work of over 50 artists many of whom showing their work for the first time.
Senior Occupational Therapist, Anna Croucher said: “Our service has been shown to produce positive therapeutic outcomes and high levels of satisfaction. SHARP is underpinned by a strong value of the importance of people and their experiences and choices.
“A genuine sense of empathy, respect and compassion is at the heart of what we do. We work creatively and flexibility with people to help them achieve what’s important to them.”
Gallery curator Mary Salome said: “I really love the recycle aspect in Jose’s work and the unique way Jose embraces the present with his style and use of materials new and old. I went to Jose’s studio at Crisis, Bermondsey Project and was bowled over by his work. So we are delighted to present this exhibition.
“Colores, dame colores Jose tells me, is the title of a Spanish song, and we will be playing this song at the private view.”
The artists who exhibit at the space come from a diverse range of backgrounds bringing different experiences. Many have used mental health services, some have been to art school, however in line with the ethos of SHARP, their aim is to provide a safe, inclusive environment that embraces creativity, a showcase of artistic talent that goes beyond labels.
The exhibition runs from 30 April – 30 May, the private view is this Wednesday 30 April 6-9pm.
Exhibition opening times: 9.30am – 4.30pm, closed weekends.
