Serving up decent hot food at a reasonable price is Express Cafe, a Brixton institution located in the heart of Market Row.
Now something of an endangered slice of old Brixton in a rapidly gentrifying arcade, the Express Cafe is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and lies a short walk from the tube station.
The decor is bright and rather garish, mixing up a hangover-bothering mix of bright red and green hues.
The food is cheap and tasty. This veggie breakfast with tea and toast came in at just £4.80.
The menu serves up all the basics.
You can watch the world go by from the large windows.
Unusually, the cafe is taken over on Thursday- Saturday evenings (7pm-11.30pm) and Sunday (11am-4:30pm), and operates as a separate French Vegetarian and Vegan restaurant, called L’Express Cafe. It’s rather good too.
