Lambeth Housing Activists to protest against Clapham Park eviction, March 31st

Lambeth Housing Activists call for council homes in Somerleyton Road, Brixton (see leaflet here)

Lambeth Housing Activists, supported by Housing Action for Southwark and Lambeth, have planned a protest outside the offices of the Metropolitan Clapham Park offices at 11.30am on Monday 31st March.

The protest is in support of local resident Esther and her family who were evicted from their shorthold tenancy in the area and relocated many miles away in Hackney, east London.

With Esther having to travel all the way back into Lambeth every day to take her daughter to school, campaigners are urging the Housing Association to quickly find a home for her in the area.

Here’s the full text of the appeal from the Lambeth Housing activists website.

Protest – No To Clapham Park Evictions
Monday 31st March, 11:30
Clapham Park Offices, 91 New Park Road, SW2 4AX

Organised by Lambeth Housing Activists, supported by Housing Action for Southwark and Lambeth

Ester and her family were evicted from Aspinall House on March 10th 2014 by bailiffs employed by Clapham Park Homes. They had been shorthold tenants for 3 years and were in good standing when they were evicted.

There was no actual cause for the eviction except, they understand, that at some time in the future, Aspinall House and the block next door will be demolished. At the moment, we can see no sign on the ground of this happening.

Esther has a daughter of 8 and is 5 months pregnant. The couple have been placed in temporary accommodation in Hackney, so Esther has to make the journey from Hackney and back every day to take her daughter to school in Thornton Road. Esther is a nursing auxiliary at King’s College Hospital, so she has to commute to there too.

Ester and her family have lived continuously in Lambeth for 12 years.

When Esther consulted her Housing Officer to see if there was alternative accommodation on Clapham Park, she was told that the Housing Association had nothing for them. With something approaching 4000 housing units in Lambeth, it beggars belief that Metropolitan could not have found a place for this family.

We will be delivering a letter to Councillor Ed Davie, who is on the board of Clapham Park Homes, opposing this eviction on Monday

Update: Esther to be rehoused!

Clapham Park Homes (Metropolitan) backed down. Esther Santos and family have
been offered a choice of two flats back on Clapham Park Estate in Lambeth.
Just goes to show that collective trouble making works!!
