There was something of a Balkan Christmas party going down at the Electric Brixton last night as Shantel & the Bucovina Club Orkestar whipped an enthusiastic crowd into a dancing frenzy.
Support came from Brixton Buzz faves, The Actionettes, who got the dancefloor moving to their 60s go-go moves.
A decent sized crowd turned out for Shantel & the Bucovina Club Orkestar and they were clearly mindful to have a party – and their hosts were happy to oblige.
The sound at the Electric was superb, albeit a little too heavy on the bass, which rumbled away like a fleet of backfiring 747s were passing overhead.
One man, two sets of glasses.
The band put in a well crafted, super tight, high energy set, and although there was nothing particularly new on offer, if you’re partial to a bit of Balkan, you’ll love this lot.
The only real downside to the night was the outrageous bar prices: 4.50 for a can of crappy Carlsberg, a bottle of water £3, a vodka and Redbull a hefty £7.50 and £4.50 for a small glass of cheap’n’nasty Blossom Hill wine.
At those prices, we hotfooted it back to the Prince Albert around the corner the second the band finished.
