Brixton’s Prince of Wales relaunches as a restaurant downstairs & live music, comedy & club upstairs

Brixton Prince of Wales POW launch party, 11th November 2013

Last night we were invited along to the recently rebranded Prince of Wales on Brixton Road, which (as you probably already know) was previously The Lambeth… Brixton Clubhouse… Dex and before all of those, the good old Prince of Wales.

Returning to its former moniker (although it was originally the Prince Of Wales Hotel back in 1910), the venue is now operating under one name and brand and has relaunched itself as a restaurant downstairs.

Arno Maarsdrop (the guy behind the popular local Saltoun Supper Club) is in charge of the food, drinks will still be available, but the main focus downstairs will now be food.

Anyone who has visited the club upstairs will (probably) be glad to hear nothing has changed or been refurbished. The impressive roof terrace remains as it was, as does the inside space.

Event-wise the focus upstairs will be now be more live music, live comedy and community lead events, as well as the usual club nights at the weekends.

On a rainy Monday night in Brixton, we were treated to three live comedy acts with stand up from Ireland’s Andrew Maxwell & Canadian Phil Nichol, as well as sketch comedy from Shirley and Shirley (who are back to perform live this Thursday).

Andrew Maxwell tells tales about geezers moving to the suburbs and being the only potential burglar left on his street in Wood Green…

The live comedy will contine on various nights and will be curated by Wayne Saunders, who previously ran the Comedy Cafe in East London.

The comedy (quite literally) climaxed with Phil Nichol kidnapping a guy from the audience to perform a ‘gay Eskimo’ duet on the guitar.  Full marks to Andre who was happy to join in.

After the comedy, we enjoyed some laidback live Salsa from Los Charly’s Orchestra.  If you fancy learning a few dance moves yourself, Salsa classes & DJ sets continue every Wednesday.
