On the weekend we took a trip down to the Brixton Ice Rink – or Planet Ice as they like to call themselves – and enjoyed a lively ice hockey game between the Streatham Night Wolves and the Statesmen.
Admission was free and it was great to see the sport being played in the heart of Brixton – it’s an exciting game to watch, although the rules were a bit baffling at first.
Inside the stadium, the crowd was rather modest and the facilities for visitors was fairly rudimentary, with just a couple of vending machines and perhaps seating for 60-80 people.

Planet Ice: open to Brixton skaters
Controversially built on the site of the old multi-storey car park on Brixton Station Road, the 56m x 26m rink opened in January 2012 and will serve as the temporary home of Streatham’s ice skating and ice hockey teams for two and a half years while Tesco’s dodgy Hub project is being built.
The rink is open seven days a week and offers skating sessions from £4 – £9, with family deals available – see the full pricing details on their website.
Brixton’s old roller rink
It’s not widely known but Brixton once had a popular Roller Rink, which was situated on Effra Road, and served the community for over half a century.
Our sister site urban75 tells the story, and there’s some fascinating feedback from some skaters who used the rink in the 1950s: Brixton Roller Skating Rink – memories from the late 1950s.
Competitive matches at Planet Ice
The stadium hosts a total of three adult hockey teams – the Streatham Chiefs, the aforementioned Night-Wolves and the semi-pro Streatham Redskins who are currently residing in a rather lowly position in the National Ice Hockey League South Division 1.
Here’s the remaining home fixtures for the Streatham Redskins 2012/13 season.
Entrance on the night costs £8.00 for adults and £5.00 for kids/OAPs.
